Question

In Kjeldahl's method of estimation of nitrogen, nitrogen is quantitatively converted to ammonium sulphate. It is then treated with standard solution of alkali. The nitrogen which is present is estimated as

A. $${N_2}\,{\text{gas}}$$
B. $$N{O_2}\,{\text{gas}}$$
C. $$N{H_3}\,{\text{gas}}$$
D. $${\left( {N{H_4}} \right)_2}S{O_4}\,ppt.$$
Answer :   $$N{H_3}\,{\text{gas}}$$
Solution :
When treated with standard solution of alkali nitrogen is liberated as $$N{H_3}$$  which is absorbed in $${H_2}S{O_4}$$  to get percentage of nitrogen.
